Adventures in Synthetic Biology

While geologists are debating whether Earth really has entered a new epoch, the Anthropocene, named for the dominant influence on the planet’s geochemistry these days, there’s no question that biology will never be quite the same again.

The latest achievement of J. Craig Venter — rebooting a bacterial cell as a different species by giving it a man-made genetic instruction manual — is just one step on the long inevitable path into synthetic biology.
