Visionary research: Scientists to conduct human trials of a bionic eye that beams images directly to the brain

So far ‘bionic eyes’ have only been seen in sci-fi films such as The Terminator.

In that movie Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a robot with enhanced vision capable of scanning and analysing its surroundings.

Now Australian researchers are set to make computer-aided sight a reality, though not quite as sophisticated as the infamous cyborg’s.

Scientists from the Monash Vision Group at Monash University in Australia will begin human trials of a bionic eye in 2014.

Ray of hope: Researchers will begin human trials of a 'bionic eye' - though not quite as powerful as The Terminator's

Your card details are 'stolen out of thin air': Information could be 'robbed by radiowave' thanks to new contactless technology

Insecure: Radio frequency identification (RFID), transmits bank details via its own radio signal and could be a fraud risk

Insecure: Radio frequency identification (RFID), transmits bank details via its own radio signal and could be a fraud risk

Millions of credit and debit card users could be ‘robbed by radiowave’ because of new contactless technology being brought in by banks.

Almost 20million shoppers are now able to buy goods by simply waving their card in front of a reader at the tills, even if it is still in a wallet or a purse.

But industry experts have warned that the information emitted by the cards can be stolen by fraudsters using handheld receptors that cost as little as £7 on the internet.

It means cardholders – most of whom are given a contactless card automatically when their old one expires – can unknowingly surrender their personal bank details to a thief by simply walking past them in the street.

Breakthrough in search for alien life as scientists manufacture DNA-like molecule which can transmit genetic material

A new discovery from scientists has advanced the cause of those searching for extraterrestrial life.

On Earth, all life is made up of DNA and RNA, molecules which can store and transmit genetic information.

But now biologists have confirmed that at least six other types of molecule can also support life, dramatically increasing the likelihood of life on other planets.

Life: DNA is the major building block of life, but it is not the only possibility for organic material on other planets

Life: DNA is the major building block of life, but it is not the only possibility for organic material on other planets

A team from the University of Cambridge managed to manufacture synthetic XNAs (xeno-nucleic acids) which mimic some of the properties of DNA and RNA.

It is crucial for organisms to be able to grow and reproduce in order for life to be sustainable, so they must have a way to transfer genetic material from one molecule to another.

Bigfoot: The Strangest Case Of All?

While I am personally convinced that the vast majority of people who report encounters of the Bigfoot variety are entirely honest when it comes to talking about their experiences, there’s always some joker who wants to pull the wool over our eyes, muddy the waters, or engage in an outrageous hoax. And although many researchers of the Fortean variety are more than content to ignore such cases, I don’t…

Rather, my view is that it’s important we not only highlight such cases, but that we learn from them as well. And, certainly, one of the strangest of all Bigfoot hoaxes occurred in England, back in March 2006, when monster-based hysteria was at its height deep in the heart of the nation’s Cannock Chase woods.

The gates of heaven? Hubble telescope captures extremely rare picture of dying star emitting ethereal beams of light

It looks like the gateway to heaven - but this stunning image taken by the Hubble Telescope has captured the dramatic phase of a dying star's lifespan when it runs out of nuclear fuel and emits beams of light like searchlights.

Swansong in light: this Hubble image of the Egg Nebula shows one of the best views to date of the brief but dramatic phase in a star's life when it runs out of nuclear fuel

Swansong in light: this Hubble image of the Egg Nebula shows one of the best views to date of the brief but dramatic phase in a star's life when it runs out of nuclear fuel

It's called the preplanetary or protoplanetary nebula stage and this image shows the Egg Nebula, which was the first preplanetary nebula to be discovered, less than 40 years ago. Scientists admit many aspects of this phenomenon remain a mystery.

NASA and the European Space Agency, who run the telescope, explained that over a few thousand years the hot remains of the aging star in the centre of the nebula, or cloud of dust, heat it up, 'excite' the gas, and make it glow.

At the centre of the image, hidden in the thick dust cloud, is the nebula’s central star. Four beams of light shine out from it through the nebula like searchlights. It is thought that ring-shaped holes in the thick cocoon of dust, carved by jets coming from the star, let the beams of light emerge through the otherwise opaque cloud. They said the cloud had an 'onion-like' layered structure which is caused by bursts of material being ejected from thedying star every few hundred years.

What if we ARE all alone? Scientists say Earth may be a 'one-off fluke' and the Milky Way's billions of other planets may all be lifeless

  • Analysis suggests idea of extraterrestrial life is 'wishful thinking'
  • Scientists have believed that because life evolved early in Earth's history, it must be everywhere
  • Idea is simply wrong, say Princeton scientists
  • Earth could be a one-off aberration and other worlds could be lifeless

Nasa has said there are 'billions' of planets in our own Milky Way galaxy - but a new study suggests that the idea that they are teeming with alien lifeforms may just be wishful thinking.

Two Princeton scientists used what's known as 'Bayesian analysis' - a technque that 'boils down' ideas to the actual data, as opposed to scientists' own ideas about what 'should' be true.

They suggest that it's very possible Earth is a one-off aberration where life took hold unusually fast - and on the average extraterrestrial planet, the chances of life are very low indeed.

UFOs Over Russia: Mysterious Sights Spotted In St. Petersburg Sky

It must have seemed like an aerial invasion to the many eyewitnesses who gazed skyward in St. Petersburg, Russia, on the nights of April 9 through 11.

Reports of the UFO activity didn't initially receive wide coverage outside of St. Petersburg, but have since trickled out.

Most of the strange light formations were seen and videotaped by many people in and around Russia's second-largest city, including one ball-shaped object seen hovering above St. Petersburg's Pulkovo Airport.

According to the Russian news site LifeNews, airport employees were concerned the UFO might cause a disruption during takeoff and landing of aircraft.

A short time later, before any action could be taken, the UFO vanished.

New 'solar paint' could generate electricity from the roofs and walls of EVERY home without the need for bulky panels

  • 'Nanocrystals' used to generate power
  • Can be painted or printed onto walls or windows
  • So tiny you could fit 250,000,000,000 on head of a pin

One day, a thin film of 'solar panel' could be painted over windows and walls to turn every home into a giant hi-tech 'sun trap'.

The hi-tech solution could make solar energy a practical solution t the energy crisis.

The technology has long been championed as a solution to the growing energy crisis, but as it exists now, it is far too expensive.

A typical home needs around 285 square feet of solar panels to meet its electricity needs, costing around £10,000, although that does not include the expensive installation.

Scientists at USC have developed a potential pathway to cheap, stable solar cells made from nanocrystals so small they can exist as a liquid ink and be painted or printed onto clear surfaces.

The solar nanocrystals are about four nanometers in size — meaning you could fit more than 250,000,000,000 on the head of a pin — and float them in a liquid solution.

'Like you print a newspaper, you can print solar cells,’ said Richard L. Brutchey, assistant professor of chemistry at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences.

Liquid nanocrystal solar cells are cheaper to fabricate than available single-crystal silicon wafer solar cells but are not nearly as efficient at converting sunlight to electricity.

But if not something of apparent human design and origin, what then?"

UFOs: About That White House Question

One of those longstanding questions relative to UFOs that consistently and constantly pops up is: If aliens and UFOs are indeed visiting us, then why don’t they land on the White House lawn and announce their presence to one and all?

Okay, I know it’s a question that is often asked in a light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek, or skeptical fashion. But, for some, it’s a question posed with utter and deadly seriousness. And so, keeping that in mind, just why might it be that “the aliens” – if they are among us - don’t land in full view of the President and his staff? Let’s take a look…

For many, the aliens should land on that green and pleasant piece of grass for one specific, and massively important, reason: To say “Hello” to the great Human Race. Pleeeez! The sheer level of never-ending human arrogance and ego-driven nonsense that populates our world never ceases to amaze me. In the bigger scheme of things, and as a species that has actually achieved anything significant (aside from finding better and bigger ways to destroy each other), we have been around for barely a millisecond.

Leathernext: Marines Want Better Networks, Sensors — And Terminator Vision

Marines might soon see the world the way the Terminator does. Screencap: Atari via IGN

The Marines of the future are all about communication.

The Leathernecks want data networks that can keep them connected all the way from the decks of their ships to the beaches they storm. They want online search tools that rely on natural language instead of keywords (like the rest of us). And they want software that can sift through the oceans of data their wartime sensors and cameras collect — including tools that can scan through faces in a crowd, like the Terminator, and alert Marines to danger.

That’s according to the Corps’ blueprint for its science and technology needs over the next 20 years. Communications are a big, gaping hole for the Marines of the present, and the Marines want to hand their successors more seamless, networked ways of talking. That’s on top of other wish-list material, like advanced sensors that can sniff drugs and homemade bombs — oh, and laser-stopping goggles.

His company Stone Aerospace has built robotic underwater vehicles for exploring under the Antarctic ice sheets. Stone's proposal is for a "cryobot" powered by a 5,000-watt laser. The laser light is transmitted via a fiber optic cable that unspools behind the robot as it drills through 250 meters of ice.

The robot, a 10-inch-wide, six-foot-long cylinder called VALKYRIE, would melt the ice ahead of it and leave the power plant on the surface. Stone Aerospace has tested a protoype of such a device and plans to try it out on an Alaskan glacier in June 2013.

Junk DNA Can "Sense" Viral Infection --New Discovery

6a00d8341bf7f753ef015392961df3970b-800wi

In molecular biology, "junk" DNA is a collective label for the portions of the DNA sequence of a chromosome or a genome for which no function has yet been identified --until now. About 98.5% of the human genome has been designated as "junk", including most sequences within introns and most intergenic DNA.

While much of this sequence is probably an evolutionary artifact that appeared to serve no present-day purpose, in fact, recent studies have suggested functions for certain portions of what has been called junk DNA. Moreover, the conservation of some "junk" DNA over many millions of years of evolution may imply an essential function. The "junk" label is therefore recognized as something of a misnomer, and many prefer the more neutral term "noncoding DNA."

Death from above: Video of drones fitted with machine guns that could transform the battlefields of the future

Missile-carrying robot drones have been used for years by the U.S Army - but they’re deployed against large targets and need a runway to take off from.

Now a new YouTube video shows that in the future, drones could also carry out the close-combat duties of foot soldiers.

In the clip ‘FPSRussia’, whose Call of Duty videos and real-life weapon demonstrations have earned him a cult following, shows off a quadrotor – a mini helicopter with four rotors - outfitted with a machine gun.

Air we go: FPSRussia demonstrates a hover drone outfitted with a machine gun

The machine is controlled by a tablet computer and FPSRussia explains that a camera on front of the quadrotor gives him a ‘birds’ eye view’ of the target.

It’s capable of flying at 30mph and at an altitude of a quarter of a mile, but for the demonstration, FPSRussia takes the drone a short distance away to a group of life-size dolls positioned on a slope.

The machine gun is capable of firing 100 rounds a minute – and it’s not long before the figures are completely destroyed.

How Ancient Viruses Invaded Our Genomes --New Clues Discovered

111012132655-large

Scientists have uncovered clues as to how our genomes became riddled with viruses. The study reveals important information about the so–called 'dark matter' of our genome. For years scientists have been struggling with the enigma that more than 90 percent of every mammal's genome has no known function. A part of this 'dark matter' of genetic material is known to harbour pieces of DNA from ancient viruses that infected our ancestors going back as far as the age of the dinosaurs.

Researchers at Oxford University, the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center in New York and the Rega Institute in Belgium wanted to know how these ancient viruses got into their hosts' genomes in such abundance.

Private Spaces: Google Goes to Outer Space for New Business Idea

Dispatches from the future, in which astronauts farm the blackened mare plains on our Moon’s dark side for rich Helium-3 isotopes to be used in advanced fuel cells back on terra firma, sound far more like science fiction than anything we’re capable of right now (unless, of course, Newt Gingrich were to be elected… but I digress). Then again, potential candidates in the present U.S. election may not be the only ones with their eyes on the stars.

In fact, shortly after his historic solo descent to the depths of the Mariana Trench, filmmaker James Cameron has been named along with such names as Ross Perot Jr. in an alliance with the uber-company Google Inc, in a project that could seek to make not only galactic mining operations a reality, but which could move us ever more close to the privatization of space travel.

UFOs: The Project Beta Scandal

Many people unacquainted with the complexities of the UFO puzzle assume that all talk of attempts by “the government” to silence certain players in the field is nothing but outright paranoia and lies. Even within Ufology there are those who dismiss such stories as X-Files-like nonsense. How wrong they all are. Published in 2005, Greg Bishop’s book, Project Beta: The Story of Paul Bennewitz, National Security, and the Creation of a Modern UFO Myth, provided the field of UFO research with what was without doubt one if its most important contributions in years.

The subject matter of Project Beta was an unusual one; and while seasoned researchers were already aware of certain aspects of this dark and ultimately tragic affair, those unaccustomed to the events in question might have been forgiven for thinking that they had stumbled upon a high-tech, X-Files-meets-Robert Ludlum-style thriller. But Project Beta told a very real story – one that was as harrowing as it was informative.

The Betz Mystery Sphere: Alien Artifact or Doomsday Device?

This bizarre, allegedly self propelled, seamless metallic orb was discovered by members of the Betz family in 1974, and rapidly became the object of fascination, controversy and alarm for scientists, military officials, ufologists and the general public as the story of this mystery sphere spread like wildfire through the international media.

On May 26, 1974, Terry Mathew Betz, a 21 year-old pre-med student, along his mother Gerri and his marine engineer father, Antoine, were inspecting the damage caused by a brush fire that had raged across an 88-acre swathe of woodland that they had recently acquired on marshy Fort George Island, which is nestled just east of Jacksonville, Florida.

At first the trio found nothing out of the ordinary, but before their expedition was over they stumbled across a peculiar highly polished, metal orb that was just under 8-inches in diameter. The only delineating mark that the three could find on the eerily unblemished object was an elongated triangular shape stamped into its surface.

Mindmelding: two brains, one consciousness?

Mindmelding: two brains, one consciousness?: "Have you ever wondered if it is really possible for others to know what you are thinking? Our brains seem to allow both “internal” points of view, and “external” ones.  As individuals, we know them from the inside as we experience our thoughts, perceptions, and emotions. Scientists, on the other hand, only know our brains from the outside, as they employ brain imaging, EEG, or other types of techniques. This appears to imply that scientists are cut off from ever studying our brains from the internal point of view.  But if this is right, it has huge consequences for the way we think of our minds. If our thoughts and feelings exist in a realm that science can never touch, then perhaps they aren’t really physical?  And if this is right, it would lend great support to the ancient theory of dualism, according to which the mind and the brain (along with the rest of the body) belong to two different metaphysical categories, the mental and the physical."

EXTREME LIFE: THAWING ICE REVIVES ANCIENT BACTERIA

hans solo in ice

Like Han Solo in frozen in carbonite, bacteria entombed in Earth’s polar ice sheets can live in a sort of suspended animation. The difference is the bacteria can persist this way for hundreds of thousands of years. And now, with the ice melting at unprecedented rates, they are poised to re-enter the ecological scene, eliciting new worries about the effects of global warming.

Extreme not only in age but also in number, the biomass of bacteria and other microbes beneath the ice sheets may be “more than 1,000 times that of all the humans on Earth,” freelance writer Cheryl Katz reported this week in The Daily Climate and in Scientific American.

"It's a way of recycling genomes," Montana Sate University microbiologist John Priscu told Katz. "You put something on the surface of the ice and a million years later it comes back out."

It’s that “coming back out” part we should hope the scientists keep an eye on. They have already managed to revive creatures that last lived long before humans walked the planet: Louisiana State University microbiologist Brent Christner revived bugs encased in 750,000-year-old ice.

Older still may be the microbes that other research teams may soon encounter as they drill into subglacial lakes Vostok and Ellsworth, two bodies of water that sit beneath a mile or more of Antarctic ice and have been sealed off from the outer world for millions of years.

10 Disgusting Examples Of Very Young School Children Being Arrested, Handcuffed And Brutalized By Police

10 Disgusting Examples Of Very Young School Children Being Arrested, Handcuffed And Brutalized By Police: "When did we decide that it was okay to treat very young school children as if they were terror suspects?  When I was growing up, I don't remember a single time that the police ever came to my school and arrested anyone.  But now police are being called out to public schools at the drop of a hat.  All over America, very young school children are being arrested and marched out of their schools in handcuffs in front of all their friends."

Brain decoder allows monkeys to control paralysed muscles

Brain decoder allows monkeys to control paralysed muscles: "Spinal injuries often leave people with paralysed limbs, as commands from their brains can no longer reach the muscles in their arms. So why not bypass the spine entirely? A team from Northwestern University has used a brain decoder to give monkeys control over their temporarily anaesthetised arms. The decoder deciphers the activity in the monkey’s motor cortex (the part of the brain that controls movements), and electrodes in the monkey’s arm stimulate its muscles in the right way. Even though it can’t feel its arm, it can grab a ball using this electronic middle-man."

Swedish Stonehenge? Ancient Stone Structure Spurs Debate

Swedish Stonehenge? Ancient Stone Structure Spurs Debate: "Ancient Scandinavians dragged 59 boulders to a seaside cliff near what is now the Swedish fishing village of Kåseberga. The Population Control Holocaust

The New Atlantis » The Population Control Holocaust: "There is a single ideological current running through a seemingly disparate collection of noxious modern political and scientific movements, ranging from militarism, imperialism, racism, xenophobia, and radical environmentalism, to socialism, Nazism, and totalitarian communism. This is the ideology of antihumanism: the belief that the human race is a horde of vermin whose unconstrained aspirations and appetites endanger the natural order, and that tyrannical measures are necessary to constrain humanity."

Spiders from Mars? Nope - further than that: Hubble captures 'starburst' in heart of Tarantula nebula

A 'starburst' is the focus of a new image that shows off the sheer power of the Hubble space telescope - capturing millions of young stars being born in 30 Doradus, a star-forming complex in the heart of the Tarantula nebula.

It's one of the largest mosaics ever assembled from Hubble photographs - released to celebrate the space telescope's 22nd anniversary - and captures space oddities such as the fastest-rotating stars ever detected.

The nebula is 170,000 light years from Earth - 'next door' in galactic terms - so Hubble can pick out individual stars in the prolific star-forming region

Black-Eyed People: A Race in the Shadows

Leanne Davies couldn’t explain her panic. Davies carpooled to work in Deale, Maryland, in 1999 when one night her driver stopped at a small grocery store, leaving Davies in the pickup alone. “We parked at the edge of the parking lot with the store entrance and lot behind us,” Davies said. “We had worked late and it was well after dusk.”
