Rice contamination lawsuit settled for $750 million
Rice contamination lawsuit settled for $750 million: "A lawsuit by rice farmers against a company accused of letting genetically-modified rice contaminate farmers’ fields has been settled for $750 million for affected farmers in Texas and Louisiana, who have 90 days to sign on and receive their share of the award. Attorneys representing thousands of U.S. long-grain rice farmers agreed to the settlement, which stems from the 2006 discovery of two strains of genetically-modified rice in Missouri, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi crops. The contamination by Bayer CropScience’s “Liberty Link” rice caused a huge drop in price for the grain, because major markets including the European Union refused to buy American rice."
