Scientists re-create spiny 'ancestor of the cockroaches' from 300m years ago
Scientists from Manchester University had little to go on other than small holes left in a rock by the decomposing bodies of the insects, but by scanning the 'fossils' in a CT scanner - along with 3,000 X-ray scans, they were able to re-produce the insects down to the smallest details."

Is Antimatter a Viable Starship Fuel?
A paper published earlier this year by a pair of enterprising (get it?) physicists should fan the flames of that fantasy even further.
Ronan Keane (Western Reserve Academy) and Wei-Ming Zhang (Kent State University) report that the latest results from their computer simulations indicate that at least one key component of realizing a working antimatter propulsion engine -- highly efficient magnetic nozzles -- should be far more efficient than previously thought. And such nozzles are feasible using today's technologies."

This will bug you... The indestructible micro-animals that can survive the vacuum of space - and most of them are after your blood
It is the water bear - officially known as the tardigrade - and despite being a fraction of a millimetre in length and mostly consigned to a lazy life exploring pond moss, it is almost indestructible.
You can freeze it at close to absolute zero - at minus 273C - or heat it to above 151C.
Or you could keep it without water for a decade, subject it to almost any kind of pressure, or send it into the radiation-filled vacuum of space where it can survive beyond ten days without any damage.
It is just one of the micro-sized and extraordinary bugs living in our back gardens - or even in our own bodies."

From Man To Animal
As readers of Mysterious Universe will know, I have a particular fascination with the legendary tales of blazing-eyed, supernatural black hounds roaming the British countryside in times both past and present. And, as I have noted, some of the reports suggest the beasts are kind of like animal-like Grim Reapers, coming to call and collect on the soon-to-die. But, there’s another angle I have not yet touched on here, but will do so now. It’s the idea that the phantom black dogs are not coming for those that death has in its icy grips. But that they are the dead: deceased humans whose souls have shape-shifted into animal form. To be sure, it sounds strange. But it’s a theory that had widespread support in the past…
Elliott O’Donnell was the author of numerous classic titles on all manner of mysteries, but it is his 1912 book, Werewolves, that has a bearing upon the very matters under the microscope – namely, the ghostly black dogs of Britain. O’Donnell presented a fascinating body of data in his near-legendary book, which is essential reading for anyone wishing to acquaint themselves with hard to find data on all manner of strange beast, including black dogs, and not solely the werewolves of the book’s title. Nevertheless, O’Donnell’s words are deeply applicable to this particular debate concerning the real nature of the British black dog.

UFOs: What the Hell?
In a world filled with terrorism, Middle Eastern wars and skirmishes, disturbing changes in weather patterns, apocalyptic tales of the Mayans and 2012, and Hollywood’s ongoing obsession with “end of the world”-type movies – check out Contagion; Children of Men;Knowing; Dawn of the Dead; The Happening; and 28 Days Later as just a few examples from the last 10 years – it’s hardly surprising that people might be tempted to look to the stars for salvation.
In other words, if we can’t help ourselves, maybe “the aliens” will do a better job. Of course, people have looked for advanced, outside help ever since the era of the UFO was born in the summer of 1947. The problem, however, is that our call has not been answered. At least, not yet it hasn’t. But, some say, maybe that’s about to change – but not in ways most might imagine or hope for.

Saturn's Enceladus --Could It be the Solar System's Hotspot in the Search for Life?
Enceladus-flyby-browse Saturn's icy moon Enceladus is emerging as the most habitable spot beyond Earth in the Solar System for life as we know it, scientists said last week at a meeting of the Enceladus Focus Group at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California.
"It has liquid water, organic carbon, nitrogen [in the form of ammonia], and an energy source," says Chris McKay, an astrobiologist at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California. Besides Earth, he says, "there is no other environment in the Solar System where we can make all those claims."

The Future of Cryptozoology
Just recently, I wrote a post here on the subject of the future of Ufology. It was an article with which some agreed, others didn’t, and a few complained about. So it goes! Well, it’s time for another post that will no doubt provoke similar responses. In the same way that I have a deep interest in UFOs, I also have a great passion for cryptozoology – the study of unknown animals, such as Bigfoot, lake-monsters, sea-serpents, the Abominable Snowman, the Chupacabras, Mothman, and werewolves. But, what does the future have in store for those of us that chase what, in simple terms, are termed monsters? Let’s take a look…
Within cryptozoology, there’s plenty to look for and find, but what actual successes have been made? Have any successes been made, or is just the case that we have a lot of reports? And, yes there is a difference, a big one: a pile of papers, stacks of files, and a tidy number of thumb-drives do not equate to answers or proof.
