Cars Without Drivers: Get Ready to See Automated Automobiles on the Open Road
A century ago, the horse-drawn carriage became obsolete. Within the last decade, GPS technology rendered paper maps useless. And if the electric movement gets going in earnest, gasoline may one day be a thing of the past. Next on the chopping block: the need for human drivers"

The top 10 emerging technologies for 2012
Could 'artificial leaf' technology power the cars of the future? Scientists aim to create 'oil' using photosynthesis
Scientists have applied a new twist to the process of photosynthesis - the method plants use to harness the energy of sunlight.
Instead of producing organic material from carbon dioxide, as plants do, they plan to manufacture a hydrocarbon 'fuel' which could be used instead of oil, using photosynthesising bacteria."
Telescope described as 'biggest leap since Galileo' will unravel how planets form - and could solve the mystery of where Earth's oceans came from
The world's most expensive ground-based telescope, the $1.3billion ALMA array high in the Chilean Andes, has a new mission - to study how planets like our Earth form.
Together with another huge radio telescope, the Very Large Array (VLA), a collection of 27 antennae in New Mexico, ALMA is delivering the first insights into how planets form from the discs of gas and dust around young stars.
Scientists at ALMA describe the telescope as the biggest leap in the technology since Galileo.
The ALMA and VLA telescopes will capture the early stages of how planets form from the disc of dust and gas around young stars, watching as the dust forms into pebbles then finally into young worlds

DNA machine can sequence human genomes in hours
Oxford Nanopore has come up with a DNA sequencing machine the size of a USB memory stick that can decode the building blocks of life within hours rather than days

A UK firm spun out from Oxford University has come up with a DNA sequencing machine the size of a USB memory stick, a move that is set to revolutionise the industry.
Privately owned Oxford Nanopore, which was spun out of Oxford University in 2005, on Friday presented at a conference in Florida two new generation machines that can do the same job as current mainframe-sized devices, and can decode the building blocks of life within hours rather than days.

Editor of science journal says he is ready to publish details of lethal man-made flu 'in complete form'
Far deadlier than normal flu, the H5N1 strain kills roughly half of humans that contract it, but so far the virus has been mainly restricted to poultry. Scientists have researched mutations which make it more contagious."
Project Avatar: U.S. military researches ways for soldiers to control robot 'surrogates' using just their minds
The U.S. military is researching ways for its troops can use their minds to remotely control androids who will take human soldiers' place on the battlefield.
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa), the Pentagon's hi-tech research arm, has earmarked $7million for research into the project, nicknamed Avatar.
The ultimate goal of the project sounds, bizarrely, much like the fantastical plot of the the film of the same name.
Science following fiction: In Avatar, pictured, human soldiers use mind control to inhabit genetically engineered proxies
In the James Cameron movie, set far in the future, human soldiers use mind control to inhabit the bodies of human alien hybrids as they carry out a war against the inhabitants of a distant world.
According to the Darpa's 2013 budget: 'The Avatar program will develop interfaces and algorithms to enable a soldier to effectively partner with a semi-autonomous bi-pedal machine and allow it to act as the soldier’s surrogate.'
'Genius' computer with an IQ of 150 is 'more intelligent' than 96 per cent of humans
A computer has become the first to be classed as a 'genius' after scoring 150 in an IQ test.
The average score for people is 100. A score of 150 ranks the artificial intelligence programme among the top four per cent of humans.
The programme uses a mixture of mathematical logic and 'human-like' thinking, enabling it to outperform previous software on IQ tests.

Earth Lights Under Fire: Getting to the Bottom of the Mystery
The appear as if by magic–strange hovering lights above the horizon–that are mostly white, but often varying in color. What are they? Are these will o’ the wisp, or are they strange, intelligently controlled craft from another realm? Perhaps they are neither… or perhaps they are both. While we have various cultural names for these so-called “earth lights,” we have yet to find remarkably consistent scientific terms within which we can really seek to understand the phenomenon.
While physics anomalies, swamp gases, ball lightning and naturally free-floating plasma manifestations are all theories that could account for many strange airborne illuminations seen around the globe, as is often the case with strange phenomenon, our ability to explain their occurrence in a consistent, provable manner seems to continuously fall short of the mark… but why?
