Their legacy lives on: NASA robots made from 9/11 debris to survive millions of years exploring surface of Mars

Interplanetary Memorial: Nasa rover on Mars. The cable guard with the American flag is made of aluminum recovered from the site of the World Trade Center towers

They carry aluminium collected from the World Trade Centre wreckage, as a symbol of strength, dignity and remembrance.

And now NASA says its two Mars Rovers- robotic vehicles exploring the red planet- could carry their quiet tribute long beyond living memory of the Twin Towers strike.

The extra-terrestrial robots could survive for millions of years on Mars, the space agency says.

Both the Mars Exploration Rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, have an instrument containing aluminium collected from the Twin Towers.
